Learnmore Jonasi Raises Over $23K in Days After Lion King Lawsuit
Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Mwanyenyeka, popularly known as Learnmore Jonasi, has surpassed his fundraising goal within just two days after launching a GoFundMe campaign to support his legal defence.
The campaign, which initially targeted $20,000, has already raised more than $23,000, reflecting a strong show of support from fans and well-wishers as the comedian faces a high-stakes lawsuit.
Lawsuit Sparks Urgent Appeal
Jonasi launched the fundraiser on March 25, 2026, after being hit with a US$27 million lawsuit filed in Los Angeles earlier this month. The legal action was brought by Grammy-winning composer Lebohang Morake, widely known as Lebo M, over remarks related to the famous opening chant from Disney’s The Lion King.
In a statement shared on Facebook from West Hollywood, California, Jonasi described the situation as one of the most difficult moments of his life, saying the legal costs were beyond his means.
He appealed to supporters for assistance, emphasising that all contributions would go toward securing legal representation.
Joke at Centre of Dispute
The dispute stems from a joke Jonasi made during a stand-up performance and later discussed on a podcast, where he referenced the iconic Zulu chant “Nants ingonyama bakithi baba,” originally composed and performed by Lebo M in 1994.
In his remarks, Jonasi reportedly offered a humorous translation of the chant as, “Look, there’s a lion. Oh my God,” prompting laughter from podcast hosts.
However, the chant is widely understood to carry deeper cultural and symbolic meaning, often interpreted as a royal salutation honouring a king.
Allegations of Cultural Misrepresentation
According to court filings, Lebo M alleges that Jonasi deliberately misrepresented the chant and undermined its cultural significance. The lawsuit further claims that the comedian’s remarks negatively impacted the composer’s professional relationships and royalty earnings.
The damages being sought reportedly include more than US$20 million in compensation, along with an additional US$7 million in punitive damages.
