Man Beaten to Death by Mob After Being Mistaken for Thief

A 45-year-old man tragically died after being mistaken for a thief and beaten by a mob in Crowborough, Harare.

His body was discovered along a railway line on February 27, but it wasn’t until April 14 that his family was notified of his death by the police. He was buried on April 16.

Conflicting Statements on Time of Death

There has been some confusion surrounding the exact time of Tanyanyiwa’s death, with authorities offering conflicting reports.

His brother explained that while one statement from the police suggested he was murdered around 3 p.m., another indicated the time was closer to 3-4 a.m. the next morning.

According to his brother, Trust had been walking with friends when shouts of “thief” rang out.

A commotion broke out, and a security guard witnessed a car pulling up to the scene. Three men armed with batons emerged and chased Trust, eventually beating him to death.

Security Guard Fails to Intervene

Though the security guard saw the attack unfold, he did not step in to help Tanyanyiwa, leaving the men to carry out the brutal assault. Trust was later taken to a nearby clinic by the security guard, but by then, it was already too late. No one realized that the man had died until after he was taken to the hospital.

Deceased’s Nephew Describes the Discovery

Trust’s nephew, Ray Mutami, recounted how the family was later notified.

The security guard called his supervisor to assist the deceased after the gang fled the scene. They took him to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where it was confirmed he was already dead.”

The police identified his body and took it to the mortuary.

Family Identifies the Body After Missing Person Report

The tragedy took a strange turn when a friend of Trust received an anonymous call about a body found in Crowborough.

The caller suggested it might be Trust, prompting his family to file a missing person report. On April 14, the family was contacted by Kuwadzana police, who asked them to identify the body. It was, sadly, their loved one.
