Khune’s long and illustrious career at Kaizer Chiefs officially came to an end at the beginning of the current Premier Soccer League season.

Despite offers from the club to take up roles in the marketing and commercial departments, the veteran shot-stopper declined, holding on to his desire to continue playing.

When no new playing contract materialized, Khune shifted focus. He began exploring media opportunities and has since hinted at a coaching transition — a move many believe is a natural progression given his experience and leadership.

A Coach in the Making

Khune’s passion for goalkeeping development is no secret. Back in 2022, he was among 25 individuals who completed a Goalkeeper Coaching Course hosted by FIFA and SAFA.

With more than two decades of top-flight football under his belt, Khune believes he has a lot to offer the next generation of South African talent.

Responding to a fan during the Nedbank Cup’s “Agree or Disagree” challenge, Itumeleng Khune revealed his desire to step into coaching, specifically as a goalkeeper coach for the national team.

He expressed hope that the opportunity would arise, saying,

“Hopefully, the doors will open. I will take that opportunity when it comes to be a goalkeeper coach and help transfer my skills to the future goalkeepers of South Africa.”

From Player to Mentor

Renowned for his quick reflexes, pinpoint distribution, and leadership both on and off the field, Khune is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s best-ever goalkeepers.

His potential move into coaching is being welcomed by fans and analysts alike, who see it as a win for local football development.
