Kombi Horror: Driver Jailed After Passenger Falls Off Rear Bumper And Dies

Harare Kombi Driver Jailed After Passenger Falls From Rear Bumper And Dies

A Harare kombi driver has been jailed after a passenger who was clinging to the rear bumper of a moving commuter omnibus fell onto the road and later died from injuries sustained in the incident.

According to The Herald, Nyasha Muteweye, 33, was convicted of culpable homicide by the Mbare Magistrates’ Court following the fatal road accident that occurred during the early hours of February 5, 2026.

The court heard that Muteweye was driving a Toyota Hiace along Simon Mazorodze Road towards Waterfalls shortly after midnight when he allegedly allowed a passenger to hang onto the rear bumper of the moving kombi.

As the vehicle approached Chinzou Roundabout, Muteweye reportedly failed to negotiate a curve while speeding, causing the kombi to swerve before the passenger lost grip and fell onto the road.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital. However, he died five days later despite receiving medical treatment.

Court Finds Driver Negligent

Prosecutors told the court that the driver acted negligently by allowing unsafe passenger behaviour and failing to maintain proper control of the vehicle under the circumstances.

Court findings presented during sentencing stated:

“The court found that Muteweye acted negligently by allowing unsafe passenger behaviour, failing to maintain proper control of the vehicle and speeding under the circumstances.”

Muteweye was sentenced to two years in prison.

The court also barred him from driving Class 2 vehicles for two years while his driver’s licence was cancelled.

The case has once again drawn attention to the dangerous practice commonly known as “kombi surfing”, where passengers or touts cling onto moving commuter omnibuses using rear bumpers, mirrors or other exterior parts of the vehicle.

Dangerous Practice Under Spotlight Again

The risky behaviour has become increasingly common in some urban areas, particularly during busy periods when kombis are overloaded or fully occupied.

Road safety concerns linked to passengers hanging from moving vehicles have repeatedly been raised by motorists and transport authorities, with fears that a slight loss of grip or sudden vehicle movement can quickly turn fatal.

Drivers travelling behind kombis carrying people on rear bumpers often keep their distance out of fear that someone could suddenly fall into traffic.

The dangers are worsened when vehicles speed, swerve or abruptly negotiate corners.

Similar Fatal Cases Previously Reported

Similar incidents involving kombi crews and passengers hanging from moving vehicles have surfaced before in Zimbabwe.

A Bindura kombi driver was arrested after a tout allegedly fell from the rear bumper of a moving kombi on December 31 last year.

Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Fedelis Dhewu confirmed investigations into the incident.

He said:

“We are warning touts to desist from hanging at the back of vehicles in motion and drivers should be extra careful when driving because we do not want to lose precious life unnecessarily.”

Authorities continue urging kombi operators, crews and passengers to avoid the dangerous practice amid ongoing road safety concerns across the country.
