Zimbabwe On High Alert As Surveillance Systems Monitor Hantavirus Threat

Zimbabwe Surveillance And Monitoring Systems On High Alert For Hantavirus

Zimbabwe’s surveillance and monitoring systems have been placed on high alert for hantavirus, although the government says no cases of the disease have been detected in the country.

Health authorities confirmed on Monday, 11 May 2026, that three Zimbabwean health workers who had reportedly been in contact with suspected hantavirus cases returned to the country and were placed under quarantine as a precaution.

The announcement was made during a media briefing in Harare by the Minister of Health and Child Care, Douglas Mombeshora.

Health Workers Placed Under Quarantine

Mombeshora said the three health workers were isolated in line with public health protocols after reportedly coming into contact with suspected hantavirus cases outside Zimbabwe.

He said the quarantine measure was precautionary and stressed that Zimbabwe had not recorded any confirmed hantavirus infections.

Authorities said health officials were continuing to monitor the situation closely while surveillance systems remained active across the country.

Government Urges Calm Amid Monitoring Efforts

The Government urged Zimbabweans not to panic as health authorities continue monitoring possible risks linked to the virus.

Mombeshora said the Ministry of Health and Child Care was implementing all necessary precautionary measures while healthcare teams remained on alert.

Officials said disease surveillance systems at healthcare facilities and ports of entry remained active as part of broader preparedness measures.

Hantavirus is a disease associated with exposure to infected rodents and can, in some cases, cause serious respiratory illness.

Surveillance Systems Remain Active

Authorities said surveillance and monitoring systems across Zimbabwe remain on high alert despite there being no confirmed local cases.

Health officials indicated that the quarantined workers would continue to be monitored while assessments are carried out.

The Government has not yet announced how long the precautionary quarantine period will last.
