Zimbabwean Woman Arrested Over Alleged Kidnapping of Two Babies From South Africa

A woman from Marimba in Harare is in police custody after investigators allegedly discovered that two babies she brought into Zimbabwe from South Africa had no official documentation.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Yemurai Gandari, was arrested on Sunday following a police tip-off that prompted officers to track her down.

When police located her, she was reportedly with three children — two infants believed to be about eight months old and a four-year-old child.

Investigations Triggered by Missing Documents

Authorities suspect the children may have been brought into the country illegally after preliminary investigations reportedly showed that no travel papers were available for the minors.

Reports indicate Gandari entered Zimbabwe earlier this month with the children.

During searches, officers from the Victim Friendly Unit allegedly recovered a South African baby clinic card linked to the four-year-old child. The document reportedly showed the child was born in South Africa in August 2021 and later received treatment at several health institutions in Zimbabwe.

However, police reportedly failed to trace birth records for the two infants, deepening suspicions surrounding the case.

Old Allegations Resurface

The arrest has sparked renewed discussion in the community, with some residents claiming the suspect had previously been linked to controversial incidents involving children.

One resident alleged that Gandari once had a dispute with her sister after a stillbirth, amid suspicions that a baby may have been exchanged shortly after delivery.

According to the claims, the issue was never formally investigated because no police report was filed.

Other allegations circulating within the community suggest the suspect may also have been connected to another case involving a baby reportedly abandoned at a clinic by a mentally unstable woman.

Residents claim the child was eventually returned to the biological mother.

Police Yet to Comment Officially

National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi was unavailable for comment as investigations continued.

Sources said Gandari remains detained at Marimba Police Station under a kidnapping-related case reference while authorities work to establish the identities and origins of the children.
