The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has intensified Operation “No to Knives in Pockets / Ingqamu Idingani Esikhwameni / Banga Rinodei Muhomwe.” The move forms part of ongoing efforts to reduce violent crime.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said on Wednesday, 20 May, that the operation targets violent crimes. These crimes include murder, attempted murder and robbery.
Police said offenders often use weapons such as knives, machetes and catapults during these crimes.
Arrests Rise as Police Urge Public Cooperation
The operation follows growing concern over criminals carrying dangerous weapons in public spaces. These areas include liquor outlets, nightclubs, mining settlements and residential communities.
Police said minor disputes in these locations often escalate into serious violence.
Authorities also confirmed 15 arrests on 18 May 2026 under the operation. As a result, the cumulative number of arrests has reached 346 since 9 May 2026.
The ZRP reiterated that people have no justification for carrying knives, machetes or other dangerous weapons in public places.
Meanwhile, police urged the public to cooperate during stop-and-search exercises. They also encouraged residents to report people carrying dangerous weapons.
Reports can be made through the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp number 0712 800 197. People can also report cases at their nearest police station.
