South Africa Seizes Record R1 Billion Drug Haul At Beitbridge Border Post

Hidden Truck Compartment Leads To Massive Drug Bust At Beitbridge

South African authorities have announced what could become one of the country’s biggest-ever drug busts after nearly R1 billion worth of methaqualone was intercepted at the busy Beitbridge Border Post on Wednesday, 28 May 2026.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) confirmed that the massive consignment was uncovered during a targeted operation involving intelligence teams, border officials and specialised scanning equipment. Three Malawian nationals were arrested following the discovery.

According to Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber, the haul could mark a historic moment in the country’s fight against organised crime.

“This is likely the single biggest breakthrough against the drug trade in South African history,” Schreiber said.

Truck Flagged Before Reaching Beitbridge

Authorities said the operation was coordinated through the BMA’s National Targeting Centre after investigators identified a suspicious truck travelling through Zimbabwe towards South Africa.

Officials reportedly positioned themselves at Beitbridge before the truck arrived. Once it reached the border post, the vehicle was subjected to a high-tech scanner.

Schreiber said the scanner detected a hidden compartment inside the truck.

“Officers spent eight hours dismantling the vehicle before uncovering the concealed substance,” he explained.

The substance was later identified as methaqualone, commonly known as ABBA, which is often linked to the manufacture of mandrax.

Hawks And K9 Units Called In

Authorities confirmed that 713,000 grams of methaqualone were seized during the operation.

The drugs are estimated to be worth R998.2 million (about US$60.4 million).

The Hawks and K9 units were later called to the scene, while the three suspects were taken to Musina Police Station for further investigations.

Schreiber praised the operation and credited intelligence-driven policing and technological upgrades at border posts.

“The combination of intelligence-led investigations, digital transformation, and the commitment of the BMA is systematically rebuilding the rule of law at our borders,” he said.

The investigation is continuing.
