Former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Cassius Mailula has revealed his strong desire to return to the club.
However, uncertainty still surrounds his next move. The 24-year-old recently finished a loan spell with Belgian side KV Kortrijk. Although he remains contracted to Toronto FC, his future appears increasingly linked to the PSL.
Mailula burst onto the scene during the 2022/23 campaign. He scored 16 goals in 32 matches for Sundowns.
As a result, he secured a move to North America. Now, with only six months left on his Toronto FC deal, several possibilities exist. The MLS club could send him out on loan again.
Alternatively, they could release him and make him a free agent. During an interview with Andile Ncube on Metro FM, Mailula left no doubt about his preferred destination.
“I love Sundowns. Sundowns is home, you know. I think even the president and chairman know that it is my first love. Before I can think of other things and other teams, I will start with Sundowns,” he said.
Other PSL Options Remain on the Table
Despite his loyalty to Sundowns, Mailula remains open-minded. He acknowledged that football decisions often depend on negotiations. Therefore, he could consider alternative PSL clubs if talks fail.
“After that, if things don’t go well in terms of negotiations and all that, then I can start to think of other teams. But for me, Sundowns is my home,” he added.
Meanwhile, Sundowns continue to enjoy a remarkable period. The club recently claimed the CAF Champions League title.
Consequently, they became the first South African team to win the competition twice. Should Mailula return, earning regular minutes may not be straightforward.
Coach Miguel Cardoso already has strong attacking options. Brayan León and Iqraam Rayners currently lead the line.
As a result, Mailula could face intense competition for a starting place.
