Meikles Revisits Victoria Falls Hotel Exit As Sale Talks Return
Meikles Limited has once again put its remaining hotel business on the potential sale list, just months after reversing an earlier decision to keep its stake in the iconic Victoria Falls Hotel operation.
The company announced on 2 June 2026 that it is engaged in discussions over the possible disposal of its remaining interest in hospitality operations. The move marks another twist in a long-running story involving one of Zimbabwe’s best-known tourism assets.
The development comes after Meikles indicated in December 2025 that it had abandoned plans to sell its stake, citing a positive outlook for the tourism industry.
Meikles Signals Potential Exit
In a cautionary statement issued on 2 June 2026, the company informed shareholders that negotiations are underway.
The company said:Meikles Limited has revived plans to potentially sell its remaining stake in hospitality operations, including its interest in the Victoria Falls Hotel business, months after abandoning an earlier disposal plan.
“The Directors of Meikles Limited (‘the Company’) wish to advise shareholders and the investing public that the Company is currently engaged in discussions relating to the potential disposal of its remaining interest in hospitality operations.”
Meikles warned investors that the transaction could have a significant impact on the value of its shares if it is completed.
The company stated:
“If concluded, the transaction may have a material effect on the value of the Company’s shares.”
It also advised shareholders to exercise caution while trading the company’s shares until a full announcement is made.
According to the statement, shareholders will have an opportunity to vote on the proposed deal at an Extraordinary General Meeting if negotiations result in a formal transaction.
U-Turn After Optimistic Tourism Outlook
The latest announcement contrasts sharply with comments made by the company in December 2025.
At the time, newZWire reported that Meikles had decided against selling its stake in the Victoria Falls Hotel business after reviewing prospects in the tourism sector.
The publication quoted the company as citing a:
“Highly encouraging” tourism outlook.
Meikles co-owns the Victoria Falls Hotel business with African Sun and holds a 50% stake in the operation.
The company had previously explored a disposal of the asset and held discussions with Dubai-based Albwardy Investments, which acquired Meikles Hotel in Harare for US$20 million (about R360 million).
newZWire also reported in December 2025 that African Sun had explored the possibility of purchasing Meikles’ shareholding.
Albwardy Expansion Adds Interest To Deal
The renewed sale discussions come as Albwardy Investments continues expanding its footprint in Victoria Falls.
According to information shared by newZWire on 2 June 2026, Albwardy recently purchased the Kingdom Hotel in Victoria Falls for US$30 million (about R540 million).
Industry observers have also been watching developments at other major tourism properties in the resort town.
In December 2025, social media user @Strika_Cde commented on the tourism landscape, saying:
“Elephant Hills shutting down for 18 months for renovation means Vic Falls Hotel will now be the only 5 star resort in Vic Falls during that time.”
Meikles has not disclosed the identity of any potential buyer, nor has it confirmed whether the current discussions will lead to a completed transaction.
For now, shareholders and the market are awaiting further details on what could become one of the biggest tourism-sector transactions in Zimbabwe in recent years.
