Nafiz Modack trial: Hawks officer denies making promise of bail to ex-cop

The trial against alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack, continues on Monday with the spotlight on one of the co-accused, former anti-gang unit member, Ashley Tabisher.

Tabisher, who faces charges of corruption, claims he was coerced into making a statement about his involvement in the case with a promise of being released on bail.

The former cop along with Modack and 13 others, face a slew of charges for various crimes, including murder, extortion, money laundering, and fraud.

Hawks officer, Andile Mankayi, insists Tabisher was not promised bail following his arrest in May 2021.

Mankayi took the stand in court and said Tabisher’s attorney was present when he answered questions related to his arrest.

Tabisher faces charges of corruption for allegedly giving Modack inside information about the anti-gang unit’s operations.

He insists Mankayi coerced him into making a warning statement with a promise of being released on bail.

However, Mankayi denied making a promise of bail, saying even after Tabisher first appeared in court, there was no mention of bail during proceedings.

The trial continues.
