Harare Maid Arrested After Conspiring With Boyfriend to Steal US$128,000 From Employer

A 28-year-old domestic worker from Borrowdale has been arrested after she connived with her boyfriend to steal US$128,000 from her employer in what investigators suspect was a carefully planned inside job.

Linda Mubure was taken into custody following a police investigation into the disappearance of the cash from a Borrowdale residence. Her alleged accomplice, believed to be her boyfriend, remains on the run.

Court Appearance

Mubure later appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Ruth Moyo facing charges related to unlawful entry. She was informed of the allegations against her as the case was brought before the court.

According to prosecutors, the complainant, Mrs Margaret Zvinavashe, had intended to use the money to purchase a new house. On June 8, she travelled with Mubure to Borrowdale to finalise the transaction, but the deal was not completed.

The pair subsequently returned home, where the complainant reportedly stored the US$128,000 in a wardrobe inside her bedroom.

Alleged Plan to Access Bedroom

The State alleges that after learning where the money had been kept, Mubure devised a plan with her boyfriend to gain access to the bedroom.

Investigators claim she secretly took her employer’s bedroom keys to Strataven Shops, where duplicate copies were allegedly made by a locksmith.

Two days later, on June 10, Mrs Zvinavashe and Mubure travelled to a farm in Norton. Before leaving, the complainant instructed her employee to secure the property by locking doors and closing windows.

However, prosecutors allege that Mubure deliberately left the main entrance unlocked and alerted her boyfriend after they had departed.

Cash Disappears Without Signs of Forced Entry

The court heard that the boyfriend allegedly entered through the unlocked front door and used the duplicate keys to access the complainant’s bedroom.

Once inside, he is accused of taking the US$128,000 that had been stored in the wardrobe before leaving unnoticed.

When the women returned from Norton, Mubure allegedly requested the house keys and pretended to unlock the property. The complainant reportedly became suspicious after noticing that the house had never been locked and showed no signs of a break-in.

Further checks revealed that the bedroom door was open and the cash was missing.

Suspicious Phone Activity Raises Alarm

The complainant also allegedly observed Mubure deleting messages exchanged with her boyfriend shortly after the theft was discovered.

When confronted, Mubure reportedly continued clearing the conversations despite attempts to stop her.

Zvinavashe subsequently reported the matter to the police, leading to Mubure’s arrest.

Investigations are continuing, while police search for the boyfriend who is still at large.
