Ugandan Marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died after her ex-boyfriend drenched her with petrol and set her on fire, weeks after her Paris Olympics appearance.
She was 33. The runner died this morning.
On Sunday, Rebecca’s ex-lover crept in on her while she was walking home from church, her two daughters in hand.
He doused her with petrol before setting her alight.
The athlete came 44th in the Paris Olympics marathon event barely a month ago.
The Uganda Athletics Federation confirmed on X:
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace.”
