Chicago Fire have signalled their willingness to sell South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi after his standout FIFA World Cup performances.
The 20-year-old has quickly become one of football’s most exciting young centre-backs.
His displays have attracted strong interest from English Premier League and Serie A clubs.
His agent, Basia Michaels, confirmed the club’s position during an interview with ESPN.
“Chicago Fire have come forward and we’ve had conversations. They are willing to sell Mbokazi and they’re not going to hold him back [if a suitable offer arises],” Michaels said.
She added that the club remains flexible during negotiations.
“They are very open to any conversations that need to be had. They have to realise fair value for their investment.”
Chicago Fire signed Mbokazi from Orlando Pirates earlier this year for about $3 million.
Now, the club expects interested teams to match its valuation.
European Clubs Step Up Their Interest
Meanwhile, several European clubs continue tracking the highly-rated defender.
The report identifies Nottingham Forest among the clubs following his progress.
In addition, several Serie A sides have expressed interest after his impressive international displays.
Chicago Fire director of football Gregg Berhalter also addressed the growing transfer speculation.
“Like all of our players, we would be open to discussing if we saw the move was a significant sporting opportunity for the player, and support the long-term vision of the club.”
His comments suggest the club will support a move if it benefits both Mbokazi and Chicago Fire.
