ZRP arrests over 2,000 suspects as nationwide crime crackdown gathers pace

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has stepped up a nationwide operation against crime and traffic offences.

Authorities launched the exercise to strengthen public safety and improve order across the country.

Police also aim to protect lives, safeguard property, and reduce road accidents.

ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi announced that the operation started on 13 July 2026.

The nationwide campaign focuses on violent crime and dangerous road behaviour.

Police are targeting offences including murder, attempted murder, robbery, unlawful entry, and theft.

The operation also covers stock theft, rape, kidnapping, assault, smuggling, and drug-related crimes.

Police intensify patrols and roadblocks

Meanwhile, officers have increased enforcement activities in different parts of Zimbabwe.

Traffic teams are cracking down on pirate taxis, commonly known as mushikashika.

They are also targeting unregistered vehicles, cars without number plates, and drink-driving.

In addition, police are enforcing laws against unlicensed drivers, reckless overtaking, and traffic signal violations.

“To complement the operation, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified patrols, roadblocks, stop and search blitz, compliance inspections and public awareness campaigns across the country,” said Comm Nyathi.

“The public is therefore encouraged to observe the law, be responsible citizens and support police efforts in the fight against crime.”

More than 2,000 arrests recorded

The crackdown has already produced significant results.

Commissioner Nyathi said police arrested 1,809 suspects on 14 July 2026 alone.

The arrests included 26 theft suspects and 63 people for possessing dangerous drugs.

Police also arrested three robbery suspects and one murder suspect.

Seven suspects faced charges of unlawful entry and theft.

Another suspect was arrested for stock theft.

Overall, police have arrested 2,069 people since the operation began.

Commissioner Nyathi urged the public to support ongoing law enforcement efforts.

He encouraged residents to report crime and traffic offences without delay.

Reports can be made at the nearest police station.

Members of the public can also contact the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631.

Alternatively, reports can be sent through WhatsApp on 0712 800 197.
