Chaos reportedly erupted at a funeral wake after mourners allegedly confronted and assaulted Chief Bota. The traditional leader allegedly demanded money before allowing a burial to proceed.
The incident reportedly happened on Tuesday, 28 July, during the funeral wake of Lawrence Chitende. His body was expected to arrive from South Africa the following day.
According to sources who spoke to TellZim News, Chief Bota, born Tafirenyika Bwazvo, arrived at the homestead heavily intoxicated. Witnesses claimed he struggled to speak clearly before making financial demands.
Chief allegedly demanded US$120 before burial
Sources alleged the chief initially demanded a US$20 notification fee. He reportedly insisted tradition required families to notify him before burial arrangements continued.
After receiving the money, he allegedly demanded another US$100. This payment would allegedly allow the family to use its private cemetery.
Witnesses claimed he threatened to block the burial if the family refused. Instead, he allegedly ordered them to use a distant community cemetery.
The confrontation reportedly intensified when Chief Bota blocked the road. Witnesses also alleged he directed vulgar insults at women, accusing them of practising witchcraft.
Family believed previous payment settled cemetery issue
A villager told TellZim News the family had already paid Chief Bota in 2025. That payment followed the death of the deceased’s sister.
According to the villager, the chief requested US$30 at that time. The payment allegedly authorised the family to establish its own cemetery.
However, relatives believed that payment permanently settled the matter. They were therefore shocked when the chief allegedly demanded more money.
The dispute eventually escalated, and mourners allegedly assaulted the traditional leader during the heated confrontation.
