The South African Football Association has reportedly cleared the way for Pitso Mosimane’s return to Bafana Bafana.
Mosimane now stands on the verge of replacing Hugo Broos as South Africa’s national team coach.
However, SAFA and Mosimane still need to settle his contract and final salary before completing the appointment.
SAFA increases Mosimane’s proposed package
According to SABC Sport, SAFA originally proposed an annual package worth R5 million for Mosimane.
CFO Grony Hluyo reportedly presented the offer after senior SAFA officials met with the experienced coach.
That proposal fell well below Broos’ reported R1.4 million monthly earnings during his Bafana Bafana tenure.
However, SAFA has since increased its offer following Saturday’s National Executive Committee meeting.
The meeting took place at SAFA House and reportedly approved Mosimane’s return to the national team.
The revised package reportedly doubles the original proposal and demonstrates SAFA’s determination to bring Mosimane back.
The Technical Committee had already identified Mosimane as its preferred candidate to replace Broos.
Jack Maluleke leads the committee and supported Mosimane’s potential return to the national setup.
SAFA executives later visited Mosimane while attempting to complete negotiations.
The delegation included CEO Lydia Monyepao, CFO Grony Hluyo and Technical Director Molefi Ntseki.
Chief Medical Officer Thulani Ngwenya also joined the delegation during those discussions.
Mosimane faces major Bafana challenge
Mosimane has built an impressive coaching career since taking charge of SuperSport United in 2001.
He spent six years at the club and secured consecutive second-place finishes in the Premier Soccer League.
He also collected several domestic cup trophies during his SuperSport tenure.
Those achievements eventually opened the door to the Bafana Bafana job.
Mosimane initially served as caretaker coach in 2007 before taking another role within the national setup.
He worked alongside Carlos Alberto Parreira and Joel Santana before the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
SAFA appointed him permanently in July 2010.
He began that reign with a 1-0 victory against Ghana.
However, his first Bafana spell ended after a disappointing qualification campaign.
A mathematical error affected South Africa’s qualification calculations following their draw against Sierra Leone.
Consequently, Bafana missed the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and Mosimane lost his position.
His reputation, however, continued growing after leaving the national team.
Mosimane subsequently joined Mamelodi Sundowns and began an extraordinary eight-year spell with the club.
He guided Sundowns to five domestic league titles during that period.
More importantly, he delivered the club’s historic CAF Champions League triumph in 2016.
That victory made him the first South African coach to win the continental title with a South African club.
His achievements then attracted Al Ahly, who appointed him in 2020.
Mosimane guided the Egyptian giants to consecutive CAF Champions League titles in 2020 and 2021.
He also helped Al Ahly secure two FIFA Club World Cup bronze medals.
Afterwards, he expanded his experience across several international leagues.
His coaching journey included Al-Ahli Jeddah, Abha Club, Al Wahda and Iranian giants Esteghlal.
Now, Mosimane could return to the Bafana Bafana dugout with expectations considerably higher.
South Africa faces a difficult AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign in Group D.
The group includes Guinea, Eritrea and co-hosts Kenya.
Kenya automatically qualifies because it hosts the tournament, creating an unusual qualification scenario.
Therefore, only one additional team from the group can reach the finals.
South Africa cannot rely on finishing second to secure qualification.
Instead, Bafana must effectively outperform Guinea to guarantee their place at the tournament.
The qualification campaign begins during the September 2026 international window.
South Africa will host Guinea before travelling to Eritrea for their second fixture.
Bafana then face Kenya twice during a November 2026 double-header.
Finally, South Africa completes the group campaign during the March 2027 international window.
Mosimane therefore faces an immediate test if SAFA finalises his appointment.
His task will involve rebuilding confidence while delivering qualification under intense pressure.
More importantly, he must create a Bafana team capable of challenging Africa’s strongest nations consistently.
