Two women have died following a devastating fire in Gombakomba Village, Mutare District.
The incident happened on Saturday, August 8, after a fire erupted inside a locked room.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the deaths on Sunday.
Police identified the victims as women aged 18 and 29. Both women reportedly lived with mental health challenges.
Authorities have since launched an investigation to determine how the fire started and what happened beforehand.
Fire claims two lives in Mutare
According to police, the women were inside the room when the blaze broke out.
Tragically, both victims died before they could escape the burning room.
Commissioner Nyathi confirmed that investigators are now working to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“The ZRP reports a tragic incident which occurred on 08/08/26 in Gombakomba Village, where two women aged 18 and 29, who were reportedly mentally challenged, died after a fire broke out in the room in which they had been locked,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
Police later transported the bodies to Victoria Chitepo Hospital mortuary.
The victims will undergo post-mortem examinations as investigations continue.
Police issue warning over vulnerable people
Meanwhile, police have urged communities to take greater care when supervising vulnerable individuals.
The ZRP stressed the importance of maintaining safe environments for people who require special care.
Nyathi also appealed to the public to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable persons.
“Police are conducting comprehensive investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Meanwhile, the ZRP urges members of the public to exercise caution and ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable persons, particularly those requiring special care and supervision.”
