South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed sympathy following the deadly Lake Kariba ferry disaster.
The accident reportedly claimed 44 lives on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. Consequently, Zimbabwe continues mourning the victims while rescue teams search for possible survivors.
Ramaphosa stands with Zimbabwe
Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya released the statement on Thursday, 13 August.
Ramaphosa said South Africa shares Zimbabwe’s grief during the national tragedy.
“On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa extends his deep condolences to the Government and people of Zimbabwe following the extensive loss of life in a tragedy on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe,” the Presidency said.
The South African leader also extended his sympathies to the victims’ families.
Additionally, he acknowledged families still waiting for updates from ongoing search operations.
Ramaphosa also remembered those who survived the devastating accident.
“As South Africans, we stand in solidarity today with the nation of Zimbabwe as we mourn this extensive loss of life,” President Ramaphosa said.
Praise for emergency teams
Meanwhile, emergency personnel continue working at the accident scene.
Ramaphosa praised their efforts as they assist survivors and affected families.
“We wish survivors a speedy recovery, and we pay tribute to the emergency services who are working tirelessly to support and bring closure to affected families and communities.”
The tragedy has triggered widespread mourning across Zimbabwe and neighbouring South Africa.
Authorities continue search efforts while families await further information about their loved ones.
