ANC to hold memorial service for Pravin Gordhan in KZN today

The African National Congress (ANC) will hold a memorial service for former Minister Pravin Gordhan at the Kendra Hall in Durban at 17:00 today. The ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula and struggle stalwart Mac Maharaj will be the main speakers. Gordhan’s body arrived in Durban last night.

He died in a Johannesburg hospital last Friday, at the age of 75 following a battle with cancer. Gordhan had served as Public Enterprises Minister until the national elections in May this year. President Cyril Ramaphosa has accorded him a special official category 2 funeral, which will be held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban tomorrow.

The Kendra Hall is a stone’s throw away from Sastri College where Gordhan matriculated in 1967. It was Durban and the then-Natal where Gordhan cut his political teeth in 1971.

He was involved in community activism and underground ANC work in the 1970s and 1980s. He and Mac Maharaj were both involved in Operation Vula, aimed at infiltrating ANC leaders back into South Africa from 1988 onwards.
