Community members told NewsDay Live that the blaze started around 7pm, reportedly after a gas tank in one of the rooms burst.
Ashley’s sibling managed to escape as the fire spread. However, Ashley ran into a bedroom and became trapped.
Neighbours rushed to help but initially struggled to reach her because the only route to the bedroom passed through the burning room.
Community member Tatenda Katsiga said people eventually broke through the bedroom wall to reach the child.
“We had to look for tools so we could break the wall of the bedroom and rescue her. After some time, we broke the wall and took her out.”
The rescue reportedly took about 15 to 20 minutes.
