Zambian political figure Joseph Kalimbwe has criticised opposition forces across SADC over Zambia’s latest elections.
Kalimbwe accused regional opposition movements of remaining silent when Zambians needed their support.
His comments came after a tense electoral period that raised concerns among opposition figures and observers.
The 2026 elections featured incidents of violence, ballot theft and attacks on electoral officials.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia temporarily suspended vote counting after some incidents disrupted the process.
However, regional observers also described most polling stations as peaceful and orderly.
SADC nevertheless highlighted concerns about electoral violence, intimidation, media freedom and ballot secrecy.
Kalimbwe Questions Regional Opposition Solidarity
Against that backdrop, Kalimbwe questioned the commitment of opposition forces across Southern Africa.
He argued that Zambia’s opposition had previously supported democratic causes beyond its borders.
According to Kalimbwe, that support should have been reciprocated during Zambia’s difficult electoral period.
He expressed his frustration through a strongly worded message directed at regional opposition movements.
“And you so called Democratic Forces in SADC. We see you.”
He continued by recalling how Zambians had supported opposition voices elsewhere.
“For years, you have asked us to speak for you in your lands. And we have done so.”
Kalimbwe then accused those forces of abandoning Zambia when their voices mattered most.
“Your silence is loud.”
His remarks suggest growing frustration over what he views as selective regional solidarity.
Zambia’s Election Leaves Questions for Opposition Forces
The criticism comes as questions remain over the credibility and management of Zambia’s elections.
International observers identified several areas requiring improvement before, during and after polling.
These included political violence, media concerns and weaknesses surrounding electoral reforms.
Post-election tensions also intensified after security forces raided an opposition-linked location.
Authorities arrested several opposition figures while alleging threats to national security.
Opposition representatives disputed the government’s account and questioned the legitimacy of the operation.
Meanwhile, President Hakainde Hichilema was declared the election winner with roughly 60% of the vote.
His main challenger, Brian Mundubile, rejected the result and planned to challenge it.
For Kalimbwe, however, the regional response remains the bigger disappointment.
He concluded his message with a clear warning to fellow opposition movements.
“But going forward, its one for himself cause it looks like this is all selfish agendas.”
He then added:
“Its all good comrades !”
His remarks underline a growing debate about solidarity, accountability and democratic support across SADC.
