Harare Water Shutdown Back On: Entire City To Go Dry For 3 Days

Harare’s planned water shutdown is back on after last weekend’s scheduled disruption was postponed, with the entire city now facing 3 days of affected water supplies from Friday, August 21, to Sunday, August 23, 2026.

The City of Harare confirmed on Thursday, August 20, that the shutdown originally planned for August 14 to 16 would instead take place this weekend.

Harare Water Shutdown Rescheduled

The disruption is expected to begin at 6am on Friday and run until 6pm on Sunday.

The Herald reported on August 20 that the works will involve a partial shutdown of Morton Jaffray Water Works and a total shutdown of Warren Control Pump Station.

The repairs are intended to address leaks and facilitate reservoir cleaning at both facilities.

The City of Harare said the work would affect supplies across the capital.

“Consequently, water supply to the entire City of Harare will be affected during this period,” the council said.

This means residents who prepared for the original shutdown last weekend will once again need to make arrangements for the rescheduled works.

Residents Urged To Store Water

The local authority has advised households to store enough water before the shutdown begins.

“Residents are urged to store enough water in clean, covered containers before Friday morning and to use water sparingly during the shutdown period,” the council said.

Normal water supplies are expected to resume at 6pm on Sunday after completion of the works.

What Harare Residents Need To Know

The council said residents requiring updates or emergency assistance can contact the Harare Water Call Centre on 0242-791665 or 0242-791101.

The shutdown is a rescheduled maintenance programme originally planned for August 14 to 16, not a separate new shutdown.

Residents now have until Friday morning to prepare for the 3-day disruption.
