ZHRC Commissioner Martin Muduva Dies In Suspected Murder-Suicide After Axe Attack
Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) Commissioner Martin Muduva has died in what is being treated as a suspected murder-suicide after he was allegedly attacked with an axe at his Harare home, with his wife also dying after reportedly ingesting poison.
The tragedy unfolded at the couple’s home in Dzivarasekwa Extension on Tuesday night, 8 September 2026. Muduva was reportedly struck twice with an axe during what sources described as a suspected domestic dispute.
What Happened At The Dzivarasekwa Home?
The Herald reported that Muduva and his wife were both taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals after the incident.
His wife reportedly died on Tuesday night, while Muduva succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning, 9 September.
The precise circumstances leading to the alleged attack remain unclear, and police confirmation was not immediately available.
The deaths have therefore been described as a suspected murder-suicide based on the reported sequence of events, rather than as a confirmed police finding.
ZHRC Mourns Commissioner And Wife
The ZHRC confirmed the deaths on Wednesday, describing them as an “untimely passing” and expressing condolences to the couple’s children and relatives.
“The death of Commissioner Muduva is a devastating loss to the Commission and to all those who had the privilege of working with him.”
Muduva was appointed to the ZHRC on 19 December 2024. The Commission said he made notable contributions, particularly around the connection between human rights and technology.
The ZHRC is a constitutional independent commission responsible for promoting, protecting and enforcing human rights and administrative justice in Zimbabwe.
The deaths have left the Commission mourning one of its commissioners and his wife as investigations continue.
