Man Arrested After Misappropriating US$121,500 Meant To Buy Friend A House

A house purchase arrangement between two friends has landed a 44-year-old Harare man in court after he allegedly failed to account for US$121,500 sent to him to buy a property in Zimbabwe.

The complainant, Martin Masawi, was reportedly living in Lusaka, Zambia, when he entrusted the money to Ronaldo Sunungurai Chirochangu to handle the purchase on his behalf.

The funds were deposited into Chirochangu’s American bank account, but the intended transaction allegedly did not go ahead as agreed.

Money Sent For House Purchase

According to the court records seen by The Herald, the arrangement was made on April 22, 2026, when Masawi and Chirochangu agreed that the latter would facilitate the purchase of a house in Zimbabwe.

Masawi allegedly transferred US$121,500 into Chirochangu’s account for that specific purpose.

Chirochangu is accused of receiving the money but failing to fulfil the agreement. The State alleges that when the agreed deadline passed, he became evasive and could no longer be reached on his cellphone.

Upon his arrest, an informant positively identified him, according to the State’s account.

The full amount allegedly involved in the case is US$121,500, and the court heard that none of the money had been recovered.

Charged With Theft Of Trust Property

Chirochangu appeared before Harare magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa, facing a charge of theft of trust property.
