Two Brothers, Aged 12 And 14, Die After Eating Ice Cream As Police Hunt Stepmother
Two young brothers from Rusape have died after reportedly becoming violently ill shortly after eating ice cream, with police now searching for their stepmother, who allegedly disappeared while they were at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.
Emmanuel Makarimai (14) and his younger brother, Tanaka Makarimai (12), died at the hospital following the suspected food poisoning incident. The boys attended Mabvazuwa Primary School, where they were in Grade Seven and Grade Five, respectively.
Their stepmother, Vimbai Mushava, is reportedly wanted for questioning over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Rusape Brothers Fall Ill After Eating Ice Cream
According to The Manica Post, the children developed severe stomach pains and started vomiting after consuming ice cream.
The driver who had transported them to Harare reportedly rushed them to Parirenyatwa Hospital for medical attention.
Mabvazuwa Primary School headmaster Bennedict Dadaya confirmed the deaths and explained that the school had received information about what happened.
“The children ate some ice cream and started vomiting and complaining of severe stomach pains. The driver then rushed the mother and the children to Parirenyatwa Hospital,” Dadaya said.
Stepmother Allegedly Disappears At Parirenyatwa Hospital
Dadaya said the woman allegedly disappeared before the children were admitted, leaving the driver to complete the hospital admission paperwork.
“Whilst at the hospital, it is said the mother disappeared before they were admitted. The driver is the one who ended up doing the paperwork for the children to receive medical attention,” he explained.
The boys’ father is reportedly based in Poland.
Dadaya said the tragedy had devastated the school community. The younger boy last attended classes on Monday, while his older brother had already completed his examinations.
The deaths have prompted a police search for Mushava as investigators seek answers about the circumstances surrounding the children’s illness and deaths. The suspected food poisoning has not been independently confirmed, and no finding of wrongdoing against the stepmother has been established.
