Zimbabwe Braces For Severe Storms As MSD Warns Of Destructive Winds, Hail And Flooding

Zimbabweans have been warned to prepare for severe thunderstorms, destructive winds and localised heavy rainfall expected across several provinces over the coming days. The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has also warned of possible hailstorms, lightning strikes and flash flooding, with residents urged to take precautions as the weather conditions develop.

The warning was issued jointly by the MSD and the Department of Civil Protection (DCP) on Friday, 6 November 2026.

Zimbabwe Provinces Facing Heavy Rain And Thunderstorms

The first round of thunderstorms is expected to affect Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Masvingo and Manicaland.

In its latest advisory, the MSD said:

“From Sunday afternoon, 08 November 2026, scattered thunderstorms, accompanied by possible hail and localised heavy downpours, are expected across Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Masvingo and Manicaland Provinces.”

On Monday, 9 November, the storm activity is expected to move towards Harare Metropolitan, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, Masvingo and parts of Manicaland.

The storms could bring strong winds capable of damaging roofs, uprooting trees and destroying crops. Hailstorms could also affect agricultural production.

Civil Protection Issues Safety Warning To Zimbabweans

The Department of Civil Protection has warned that low-lying areas, urban settlements and communities near rivers could experience flash flooding.

Lightning strikes also pose risks to people, livestock and property.

Residents have been advised to seek shelter immediately when lightning occurs. They should avoid standing under trees, near electricity lines or close to tall metal structures.

Households have also been encouraged to secure rooftops, remove loose objects from their surroundings and trim overhanging branches.

Motorists have been urged to postpone unnecessary journeys, particularly when severe weather develops.

MSD Promises Further Weather Updates

The authorities have urged Zimbabweans to follow official weather updates and safety instructions as the storms develop.

The MSD and Department of Civil Protection will continue providing daily updates through official media channels.

Residents in the affected provinces are therefore encouraged to monitor changing weather conditions and take precautions before the storms arrive.
