From Lomagundi to Cambridge: Zimbabwe students make history – representing Africa at Cambridge British debate finals
Two 15-year-old Zimbabwean students, Takura Sayi and Tanyaradzwa Kafera, are set to make history as the first from their country to compete in the International Competition for Young Debaters (ICYD) finals at the prestigious Cambridge University, the home of one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious debating societies—the Cambridge Union. The duo secured their spot after finishing second in the African Qualifier round held in November 2024.
Historic achievement for Zimbabwe
Takura and Tanyaradzwa, students at Lomagundi College, will represent not just Zimbabwe but the entire African continent at the finals on 3 May 2025. Their coach, Nqobile Dube, expressed immense pride in their achievement.
“This is the first time Zimbabwe has qualified at the junior level of this competition,” Lomagundi College announced on social media. “We are very proud of Tanyaradzwa and Takura and wish them the best of luck.”
The British Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Pete Vowles, also praised the young debaters, singling out Takura’s sharp intellect.
“Wishing Takura Sayi the very best of luck (he won’t need it, he’s intimidatingly smart!) at the ICYD finals this weekend,” Vowles tweeted. “The first Zimbabwean to reach the finals.”
A journey of excellence
The pair battled through an online qualifying round held between 27 and 29 November 2024, impressing judges with their analytical skills and eloquence. Their success has sparked celebrations back home, with many hailing them as future leaders.
“We are thrilled to see young Zimbabweans excelling on a global stage,” a supporter commented on social media. “They are proof that talent knows no borders.”
As they prepare to travel to Cambridge, all eyes will be on these two young stars as they make their mark in one of the world’s most prestigious debating competitions.
