Twelve individuals, including a child, have been declared dead after they were involved in a car accident while coming from a church service. The calamity occurred on the R81 road near Ga-Sekgopo, casting a pall of grief over the region.
The victims, all travelling together in the same taxi, included ten women, the taxi driver, and a young child, whose age is believed to be between seven and ten years old. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirmed the grim task faced by emergency personnel, who worked for hours to extricate the deceased from the mangled wreckage, a process that necessitated the complete closure of the major route.

The South African National Taxi Council in Limpopo has been shaken to its core by the incident. Their spokesperson, Sipho Phillemon Maloma, conveyed the organisation’s profound sorrow and its commitment to the bereaved. He stated,
“We are co-operating with authorities and will review safety measures to prevent future tragedies. Our hearts are with the families and communities.”
The group was confirmed to have been returning from a service in Solomondale, destined for Magoro village outside Giyani.
Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba expressed her deep shock at the incident. She said,
“The news of this accident is deeply touching, particularly when we consider the mothers and families affected by this loss. The provincial government stands in solidarity with the families and we are committed to providing them with the necessary support.”

In the painful aftermath, official procedures must begin. Premier Ramathuba is scheduled to lead a sombre gathering with the grieving families at noon on Monday. The meeting will take place at the Pietersburg Hospital Recreation Hall, where she will be assisted by Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye and Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego.
