A woman from the Cowdray Park suburb of Bulawayo stabbed her husband after he accused her of infidelity. The altercation, which erupted after allegations of unfaithfulness were levelled, saw Edline Shoko, aged 22, inflict a serious injury on her spouse.
The incident, which occurred in the couple’s home on the evening of 25 August, has culminated in a court-mandated community service sentence for the accused. Prosecutors detailed how a private disagreement rapidly escalated into a dangerous physical assault, leaving one party hospitalised and the other facing the full force of the judicial system.

During proceedings at the Western Commonage court, prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu laid out the facts of the case before Magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube. She stated,
“The facts of the matter are that on the twenty-fifth of August, at approximately nine o’clock in the evening, a quarrel erupted between the accused and her husband, Vumani Sibanda, after he confronted her about allegations of infidelity.”

Kuzu continued, detailing the moment the argument turned violent,
“The verbal exchange intensified, and in the heat of the moment, Mrs Shoko seized a kitchen knife and proceeded to stab Mr Sibanda, causing a deep laceration to the left side of his chest.”
The court heard how the injured man was swiftly transported to a medical facility for treatment of the significant wound he sustained.
Court Passes Sentence
Despite initially pleading not guilty to charges of physical abuse, Edline Shoko was convicted. The magistrate handed down a custodial sentence of fifteen months imprisonment. However, in a significant turn, the sentence was commuted. Six months were suspended for a period of five years, contingent upon Shoko demonstrating good behaviour.

The remaining nine months were converted into a punishment of 315 hours of community service, to be carried out at the Nyamandlovu Police Station. In his concluding remarks, Magistrate Ncube offered a stern warning to the convicted woman, emphasising the destructive nature of domestic violence. He was quoted as saying,
“You must learn to control your temper. Acts of violence within the home, whether committed by a man or a woman, have the devastating power to tear families apart utterly.”
