Driver Sentenced to 10 Months for Kwekwe Road Accident That Claimed Four Lives
A 46-year-old man, Percy Mkwaturi, has been sentenced to 10 months imprisonment by the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court after being found guilty of culpable homicide.
The sentence comes following a tragic road accident near Kwekwe in August 2025 that claimed the lives of four people.
The accident occurred on 30 August 2025 at approximately 18:57 hours. Mkwaturi was driving a Subaru pulling a trailer carrying fourteen passengers when he attempted to avoid a stationary vehicle.
In doing so, he veered into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a Toyota Probox at the 65km peg, resulting in the fatalities.
Negligence Cited in Court
The court found Mkwaturi negligent in several aspects: failure to maintain a proper lookout, failure to act reasonably when the accident seemed imminent, inability to keep the vehicle under proper control, and excessive speed under the circumstances.
Authorities Issue Road Safety Reminder
The Kwekwe traffic authorities have reiterated the dangers of negligent driving. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, observe traffic rules, and prioritize the safety of all road users to prevent further tragedies.

Commuter Omnibus Driver Sentenced to Three Years for Fatal Crash That Killed Eight
In a separate case, 42-year-old commuter omnibus driver Wellington Ngona was recently sentenced to three years in prison by the Mbare Magistrates’ Court after being found guilty of culpable homicide.
The sentence follows a tragic crash on October 31, 2024, around 5:30 a.m., at the intersection of Harare–Bulawayo Road and First Street, which claimed the lives of eight passengers.
Ngona was driving a Toyota Hiace carrying 13 passengers when he attempted a right turn into Bulawayo Road and was struck by an oncoming haulage tanker.
The violent impact caused the kombi to overturn, resulting in multiple fatalities. Five passengers died on arrival at Sally Mugabe Hospital, while three others later succumbed to their injuries at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
Negligence and Court Ruling
Investigations determined that Ngona failed to maintain a proper lookout and did not take reasonable action to prevent the collision.
The court ruled that his reckless driving directly caused the loss of eight innocent lives.
In addition to the prison sentence, Ngona received a lifetime driving ban for commuter omnibuses and heavy vehicles. He was also suspended from driving any other motor vehicle for six months.
