Please Stop Paying Bribes To Our Police Officers: ZRP Boss Pleads With Motorists

ZRP Boss Tells Drivers: Do Not Pay Bribes To Police Officers

The head of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has made a direct public appeal, urging motorists to refuse paying any bribes to traffic police officers. Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba delivered this message while unveiling a new fleet of highway patrol vehicles for the festive season.

The police chief stated that paying a bribe makes a motorist complicit in a crime. He called on the public to instead report any officer soliciting money or acting suspiciously.

New Highway Patrols Equipped With Body Cameras

During the announcement, Commissioner-General Mutamba revealed five new Ford Ranger vehicles for the National Highway Patrol. He explained that these units are part of an enhanced electronic traffic management system. Each officer in these vehicles will be equipped with a body camera.

“Please utilise these new National Highway Patrol vehicles to make reports whenever you encounter our teams on the roads,” Mutamba said.

He outlined the broader festive season security plan, which includes a nationwide deployment of officers for roadblocks, traffic blitzes, and stop-and-search operations. Patrols will also be increased in business districts, residential areas, and leisure centres.

Crackdown On Liquor Outlets And Smuggling

The Commissioner-General also warned that police would target liquor outlets operating outside their licensed hours. Furthermore, he highlighted a focus on curbing smuggling and the distribution of illegal substances.

“Transporters must declare all goods at official ports of entry and exit, as the law will be strictly enforced,” he stated.

In his festive season safety message, Mutamba reminded drivers that road safety is a shared duty. He advised minimising night travel due to poor visibility and cautioned private motorists against offering lifts to strangers.

The appeal against corruption comes as the force introduces technology aimed at increasing transparency and accountability on the roads.
