Another Makhado N1 Disaster: Zimbabwean Passengers Feared Dead After Bus Crash

Tragedy on N1: Zimbabwean Bus Crash Near Makhado Leaves Several Feared Dead

Several Zimbabwean passengers are feared dead after a cross-border bus veered off the road and plunged into a ditch along South Africa’s busy N1 highway on Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred near Makhado, a stretch long associated with serious road accidents.

Authorities said the bus was travelling northbound when the driver reportedly lost control, sending the vehicle off the roadway near Ingwe Motel.

Authorities Confirm Incident

A spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, Mashu Mabata, confirmed the incident and urged motorists to remain cautious.

“The department informs motorists of a bus accident involving a Zimbabwean bus on the N1 between Makhado and Musina, near Ingwe Motel,” Mabata said.

“The road has now been temporarily reopened. The bus reportedly lost control and veered off the road, landing in a ditch along the N1 North near Ingwe Motel.”

Emergency responders, including police and traffic officials, were quickly dispatched to the scene and are continuing rescue and recovery efforts.

Dangerous Stretch Under Scrutiny

The accident occurred along a notoriously hazardous section of the N1 highway between Musina and Makhado. The route is characterised by steep gradients, sharp bends, and mountainous terrain, making it particularly risky for long-distance and heavy vehicles.

This latest crash comes close to the site of a devastating दुर्घटना last year that claimed dozens of lives, including Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals, further underscoring ongoing safety concerns.

Renewed Calls for Road Safety

The incident has reignited debate around the safety of cross-border public transport operators who frequently use the N1 corridor. Concerns have been raised about vehicle maintenance, driver fatigue, and adherence to traffic regulations.

Mabata urged motorists to remain vigilant: “Motorists are advised to reduce speed when approaching the area and drive with caution. Further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available.”

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide clarity on the number of casualties and the circumstances that led to yet another tragic accident on one of the region’s busiest highways.
