President Mnangagwa Slams Filming of Accident Victims, Calls It ‘Inhumane
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has issued a stern warning over the growing habit of recording and circulating road accident scenes, describing the trend as a troubling sign of declining social values in the digital age.
He said the practice is both inhumane and disrespectful to victims, urging Zimbabweans to uphold the principles of Ubuntu.
President Raises Alarm Over Social Media Abuse
Speaking before thousands gathered at Maphisa Stadium during the Zimbabwe Independence Day celebrations on Saturday, Mnangagwa expressed concern over how digital platforms are increasingly being misused.
He said certain individuals and groups are exploiting social media in ways that disregard human dignity, particularly when they record and circulate graphic images from accident scenes.
“I, note with grave concern the increasing abuse of social media by some unscrupulous persons and groups,” he said.
“Inhumane and Unacceptable”
The President described the practice as deeply troubling, stressing that capturing and distributing such moments shows a lack of compassion for victims and their families.
He said the behaviour runs counter to Ubuntu — the African philosophy that emphasises humanity, empathy and respect for others.
“The recording of road traffic accidents and the subsequent distribution of such material, is totally unacceptable, inhumane and against the values of Ubuntu,” he stated.
Government Vows to Protect Citizens
President Mnangagwa made it clear that authorities will not hesitate to act against harmful online conduct. He said his administration is committed to safeguarding citizens, especially vulnerable groups like children, from the negative effects of digital media.
“My Administration will, without apology, protect our citizens, especially children, as well as our culture, beliefs and way of life, from the hazards of media and new technologies,” he added.
Call to Uphold Cultural Values
The President urged Zimbabweans to use technology responsibly and in ways that reflect the country’s cultural values, beliefs and traditions.
He emphasised that while social media can be a powerful tool for communication, it should not be used to dehumanise others or normalise insensitive behaviour.
