‘We are already getting violations’: Harare City Council on switching AI traffic cameras

Sixteen traffic surveillance camera sites now operate across Harare. Authorities urge motorists to revisit the Highway Code. Officials report a rising number of traffic violations.

TelOne chief executive officer Lawrence Nkala said installation has advanced significantly. He spoke at TelOne’s 12th annual general meeting in Harare last Friday. He confirmed cameras are already mounted at key intersections across the capital.

Phase one surveillance programme shows early enforcement impact

The project forms part of phase one of a national smart traffic programme. The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage leads the initiative. TelOne serves as the technical partner on the project.

“In terms of progress under phase one, there are 20 sites (for cameras) in Harare… and we do have cameras that have been mounted on poles at various intersections,” he said.

He noted 20 planned sites, with deployment already underway.

“We have got 20 sites, and in terms of implementation, the 20 sites are done, and cameras have been deployed, and we currently have 16 live sites.”

“As you travel along Samora Machel into town, obviously, you encounter cameras, and we are already getting violations.”

The system targets speeding, red-light running, illegal turns, and failure to give way. It also provides evidence for crash investigations and law enforcement action. Nkala urged motorists to exercise caution and refresh their Highway Code knowledge.
