Three Zimbabweans Killed in Russia–Ukraine War

Three Zimbabwean nationals have reportedly been killed in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, while several others were injured and are receiving medical treatment.

Journalist Confirms Deaths and Injuries

Investigative journalist Zenzele Ndebele confirmed the developments in a post on X, revealing that he had received official death notices.

Today, I received death notices for three of our people who were killed in the Russia–Ukraine war over the holiday period. Several others were injured and are currently in hospital,” Ndebele wrote.

The full identities of the other victims have not yet been publicly disclosed.

Mandla Ncube Identified Among the Dead

One of the Zimbabweans confirmed to have died has been identified as Mandla Ncube. Reports indicate that Ncube was recruited through an agent operating in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

His widow is believed to still be residing in the province, raising concerns about the impact of the conflict on families left behind.

Promises of High Salaries Lured Recruits

According to reports, several Zimbabweans were recruited into the war with promises of lucrative monthly salaries ranging between US$2,000 and US$2,500.

The revelations have once again drawn attention to recruitment networks targeting vulnerable individuals in Southern Africa with financial incentives, amid ongoing economic hardships.

Growing Concern Over Recruitment Networks

The deaths have sparked renewed concern over the safety of foreign recruits and the lack of clarity surrounding how Zimbabweans are being enlisted to fight in the conflict.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter, while calls are growing for investigations into recruitment agents operating in the region.
