Trump Slams Grammys And Threatens Lawsuit Against Trevor Noah
US President Donald Trump has vowed to sue comedian and television host Trevor Noah following a joke made during the 2026 Grammy Awards that referenced Jeffrey Epstein. The threat was issued hours after the live ceremony, with Trump publicly rejecting the remark and warning that legal action could follow.
The dispute erupted after Noah, who hosted the awards ceremony, made a quip linking Trump and former US president Bill Clinton to Epstein while presenting the Song of the Year award. Trump responded on Truth Social, condemning the Grammys, disputing the claim, and singling out Noah by name.
The Joke That Sparked The Backlash
The moment unfolded during the live CBS broadcast on Sunday night, shortly after Billie Eilish was announced as the winner of Song of the Year.
While addressing the audience, Noah said:
“There you have it, song of the year! Congratulations, Billie Eilish. Wow. That’s a Grammy that every artist wants, almost as much as Trump wants Greenland.”
He then added:
“Which makes sense because, since Epstein’s gone, he needs a new island to hang out with Bill Clinton. I told you, it’s my last year! What are you going to do about it?”
Clips of the joke quickly circulated online, prompting immediate reaction from Trump.
Trump’s Truth Social Post And Lawsuit Threat
Later that night, Trump posted a lengthy message on Truth Social attacking the Grammys and the comedian who hosted them. He described the ceremony in harsh terms before focusing on Noah’s remarks.
Trump wrote:
“The Grammy Awards are the WORST, virtually unwatchable! CBS is lucky not to have this garbage litter their airwaves any longer.”
Turning directly to the joke, he added:
“Noah said, INCORRECTLY about me, that Donald Trump and Bill Clinton spent time on Epstein Island. WRONG!!! I can’t speak for Bill, but I have never been to Epstein Island, nor anywhere close.”
Trump then escalated the matter by raising the prospect of legal action.
“It looks like I’ll be sending my lawyers to sue this poor, pathetic, talentless, dope of an M.C., and suing him for plenty$.”
He concluded the post with a pointed warning:
“Get ready Noah, I’m going to have some fun with you!”
As of publication, Trevor Noah had not publicly responded, and the Recording Academy had also issued no statement.
Politics Takes Centre Stage At The 2026 Grammys
The confrontation came during a Grammy Awards ceremony marked by overt political messaging. Several artists used the platform to highlight immigration issues and opposition to federal enforcement actions.
On the red carpet, Billie Eilish, Justin and Hailey Bieber, Finneas and Kehlani were seen wearing “ICE Out” pins, signalling resistance to federal immigration authorities following the reported killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by members of federal law enforcement.
In her acceptance speech, Eilish told the audience:
“No one is illegal on stolen land … it’s really hard to know what to say and what to do right now.”
Bad Bunny, who later won Album of the Year, echoed similar sentiments.
“We’re not animals, we’re not aliens, we are humans and we are Americans. The only thing more powerful than hate is love.”
What Happens Next
Trump’s vow to sue highlights the ongoing tension between political figures and award-show satire. While threats of legal action have been made, it remains unclear whether any lawsuit will be formally filed.
