Thabiso Malatsi Says Pitso Mosimane Could Be the Answer to Kaizer Chiefs’ Problems

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabiso ‘Skapie’ Malatsi believes renowned coach Pitso Mosimane could be the solution to the club’s struggles, but has warned that sweeping changes may follow if he takes charge.

With pressure mounting ahead of the Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates, Malatsi suggested that Mosimane has the pedigree to turn things around at Naturena. However, he cautioned that the experienced tactician would likely want to overhaul the squad.

Even Pitso can be right but obviously Pitso would want to change the players, he can even change the whole squad,” Malatsi said, implying that the former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor would demand full control and significant restructuring.

Derby Could Decide Coaches’ Fate

Malatsi was blunt in his assessment of current co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, insisting they should be shown the door if Chiefs lose to their arch-rivals on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys’ season, once filled with promise, is in danger of unravelling. Chiefs were eliminated in the first round of the Nedbank Cup and narrowly failed to advance from the CAF Confederation Cup group stages. Their recent 2-1 defeat to Stellenbosch further dented their Betway Premiership title hopes, leaving them fourth on the log and eight points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Another loss to Pirates could effectively end their championship ambitions.

Senior Players Accused of “Hiding”

Before addressing the coaching situation, Malatsi pointed fingers at the squad’s senior players, accusing them of lacking leadership and accountability.

He claimed experienced players were avoiding responsibility on the pitch, failing to demand the ball and shying away from key moments to escape criticism from the technical bench.

According to Malatsi, without strong personalities driving the team forward, even tactical changes may not be enough to steady the ship.

Malesela Also in the Frame

While Mosimane was highlighted as a high-profile option, Malatsi also proposed Dan “Dance” Malesela as a candidate whose football philosophy aligns with Chiefs’ traditional identity of entertaining play.

He argued that Amakhosi have lost their trademark “ushukela” — a style associated with flair and attacking football — and need a coach capable of restoring that flavour.

Malatsi further suggested the club should refocus on promoting talent from their development structures, pointing to emerging prospects such as Thulani Mabaso as signs of hope.

With the Soweto derby looming, the spotlight will firmly be on the technical bench — and, if Malatsi’s views reflect broader supporter sentiment, the outcome could have far-reaching implications at Naturena.
