Armed Robber Who Killed Two Cid Detectives Gets 72 Years For Spree, Yet To Face Murder Charge
Convicted armed robber Daniel Munyanyi, the man accused of executing two CID detectives in cold blood, has been slapped with a massive 72-year jail term for a string of robberies – but he has not yet been sentenced for the murder of the policemen.
The 50-year-old from Ndume Village in Ndanga sat motionless in the dock at the Masvingo regional court this week as Magistrate Innocent Bepura handed down the crushing sentence. Munyanyi was found guilty on six counts of armed robbery committed during a five-month crime spree that terrorised communities across Masvingo province. While the court suspended 10 years of the sentence, Munyanyi will effectively spend the next 62 years of his life behind bars for the robberies alone.
The court heard that Munyanyi’s crime wave began in June 2025 when he brazenly targeted a traditional leader’s homestead. However, the multiple life sentences for theft pale in comparison to the grave charges still hanging over his head. Munyanyi has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on March 20, where he will be formally charged with the double murder of two detectives from the CID Homicide Division.
The Bloody Shootout That Shocked The Nation
The slain detectives have been identified as Detective Constable Bernard Chimbeke, 37, and Detective Constable Mckenzie Chitsowe, 43. The two officers were part of a specialised team that had tracked Munyanyi to his rural home in the Chimedza area of Zaka in connection with the very armed robbery cases for which he has now been convicted.
According to police reports, the tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of March 1, 2026. The detectives had cornered their suspect at his Ndume Village homestead at around 5am. Without warning, Munyanyi allegedly opened fire on the law enforcement officers. The gun battle that erupted left the two detectives fatally wounded.
Following the bloodshed, Munyanyi went on the run, triggering a massive manhunt. Ironically, it was not police who finally captured the fugitive, but angry members of the community. On March 2, villagers in the Nyika area of Bikita cornered and apprehended the suspect, recovering the firearm allegedly used in the killings.
A Shocking Crime Spree Laid Bare In Court
As Munyanyi awaits his day in court for the murder charges, the details of the armed robbery conviction provide a chilling glimpse into his alleged criminal enterprise. Prosecutors painted a picture of a brazen and violent offender who showed no mercy to his victims.
The court was told that on June 20, 2025, Munyanyi launched his first attack on Chief Nhema’s homestead. He reportedly tied the chief with shoelaces before ransacking the property, making off with a staggering US$10 000 (approximately R185 000) in cash, along with five wristwatches, jewellery and shoes.
The festive season last year became a period of terror for residents in Zaka and Bikita. On December 8, Munyanyi hit Tawanda Mandava’s shop at Chinyudze Business Centre in Zaka. Armed and dangerous, he stole US$4 500 (approx R83 000), US$400 worth of airtime, a 9mm Star pistol, a Toyota Porte vehicle and groceries.
The robberies came thick and fast. On December 20, he stormed Brighton Mwabvu’s house at Jerera Growth Point, escaping with US$781 (approx R14,500) and a Toyota Mark X. The very next day, he struck again at Mandadzaka Business Centre in Bikita, robbing Austin Fungai of US$300 (approx R5,500) and groceries at gunpoint.
The new year brought no respite for residents. On January 6, 2026, Munyanyi appeared in Mpandawana Town in Gutu, where he robbed Emmanuel Mbanda of his Mazda vehicle and an iPhone at gunpoint. His final known robbery, as detailed in court, occurred on January 29, when he accosted Caroline Gwanyanya of Musiso Village, stealing US$300 (approx R5,500) and a Honda Fit.
Magistrate Innocent Bepura handed down the 72-year sentence but suspended 10 years on condition of good behaviour.
