Govt Set to Roll Out Breathalysers, Smart Traffic System to Curb Drunk Driving

The Government has stepped up efforts to combat reckless and drunk driving by deploying more breathalysers and implementing a new smart traffic management system at roadblocks across the country.

This move comes amid growing concern over rising road accidents, many of which have been linked to impaired driving and traffic law violations.

US$80 Million Investment from Dubai-Based Firm

As part of a broader strategy to modernise traffic enforcement, a Dubai-based company, Vitronic Machine Vision Middle East, is leading the technological overhaul through a public-private partnership. The company is expected to invest around US$80 million into the initiative.

According to authorities, the smart system will leverage advanced technologies to track and penalise offenders, ensuring that accountability is enforced impartially — regardless of one’s status or political connections.

Technology Ensures Equal Treatment — Ministers Say

In a joint statement, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe and Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona emphasised the importance of transitioning to electronic traffic policing.

This year, our priority is deploying an electronic traffic management system. Technology doesn’t discriminate — it does not care about your face, relationship, or status. It ensures fairness and holds everyone accountable,” the ministers said.

While the digital system is being rolled out, police roadblocks and traditional traffic controls will remain in place to maintain law and order.

More Breathalysers Arrive to Combat Drunk Driving

The Government, through the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), has also taken delivery of more breathalysers to be used at police roadblocks.

“These devices will be used as part of an intensified road safety mechanism to curb reckless and drunk driving,” the Ministry confirmed.

Officials also urged drivers to follow traffic regulations and encouraged citizens to report dangerous driving behaviours.

“We must also take responsibility as citizens. If you witness dangerous behaviour on the roads, report it immediately,” the statement added.

Tougher Penalties on the Horizon

Motorists have been warned that stricter penalties for traffic violations are on the cards, with the Government aiming to introduce deterrent measures to prevent lawlessness on the roads.
