Former Orlando Pirates winger set for Portugal switch

Mohau Nkota joined Al-Ettifaq from Orlando Pirates before the season started. The 21-year-old from Kimberley made an immediate impact in Saudi Arabia. He scored two goals and provided two assists in 17 matches.

Although his numbers are solid, reports now link him with a move to Benfica. Therefore, the transfer could mark another big step in his young career.

Why Nkota Could Leave Al-Ettifaq

Reports suggest the Benfica move aims to accelerate Nkota’s development. The Portuguese club is known for developing young international talent.

They have produced players who later moved to Europe’s top leagues.

“Club #Al Ittihad has decided to loan Mohau Nkota to Portuguese Benfica as part of a development plan, capitalizing on Benfica’s expertise in polishing players and selling them to top European clubs,” the Saudi reporter @_rdoss96 said on X.

Meanwhile, SABC Sports reporter Mazola Molefe contacted Nkota’s representatives. They confirmed the move is possible and could be permanent. As a result, the deal may benefit both Nkota and his long-term career growth.

Nkota’s Journey From Pirates to Professional Rise

Nkota shocked many fans with his move to Al-Ettifaq in July. He signed a three-year deal after a short senior spell at Orlando Pirates. During that time, he scored seven goals and made five assists in 39 games.

However, his journey started in Kimberley at Sol Plaatje University. His talent stood out early and caught the attention of coach Mandla Qhogi. Qhogi spotted him during a 2020 coaching clinic with Pirates youth teams.

Because he was still young, Nkota continued developing in the SAB League. Later, he moved to Johannesburg at the age of 17.

He then joined Bophelo Private School while progressing through Pirates ranks. He advanced from U-17 to U-19 and later the DStv Diski Challenge team.
