Criticism Is Normal’: Benni McCarthy Defends His Record with Harambee Stars

Benni McCarthy has dismissed growing criticism surrounding his role as head coach of Kenya’s national team, insisting that scrutiny is part of the job and not something that concerns him.

The former South African striker, who took charge of the Harambee Stars earlier this year, says he would be more worried if no one was talking about his performance at all.

Mixed Results Since Appointment

McCarthy stepped into the role during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, a challenging period in which Kenya failed to secure progression.

In his first 14 matches in charge, the coach has overseen six wins, three draws, and five defeats — a record that has drawn mixed reactions from fans and analysts across East Africa.

Signs of Progress Behind the Scenes

Despite the criticism, McCarthy believes there have been positive developments within the squad. He pointed to an increase in Kenyan players securing opportunities abroad as one of the indicators of progress since his arrival.

He maintains that such strides often go unnoticed, even as the team continues to rebuild and compete.

Limited Preparation Time a Major Challenge

The coach also highlighted structural challenges that have made his job more difficult, particularly the limited time he has with players during international breaks.

According to McCarthy, the team performs better when given extended training periods, as seen during the African Nations Championship (CHAN), where Kenya reached the quarter-finals — a historic achievement for the side.

He explained that longer camps allow for better tactical organisation and improved cohesion, something that is difficult to achieve with short preparation windows.

Calls for Patience

McCarthy stressed that expectations must be balanced with the realities on the ground, including the depth and competitiveness of the domestic league compared to more established football systems.

While he respects public opinion, he believes critics often overlook the constraints he faces in building a competitive national team.

Focus on Long-Term Growth

Looking ahead, the coach remains focused on developing a clear playing style and improving consistency. However, he emphasised that meaningful progress will depend on having more time to work with players and implement his ideas.

For now, McCarthy appears unfazed by outside noise, viewing criticism as a natural part of leadership in football.
