Three Foreign National Shop Owners Shot Killed In Brazen Daylight Attack In Johannesburg

Three foreign national shop owners were shot and killed in a brazen daylight attack in Johannesburg, after gunmen stormed a McDonald’s restaurant in the CBD and opened fire on Monday, 27 April 2026.

The shocking incident unfolded at the corner of Jeppe and Smal Streets. Police confirmed that three men, believed to be between the ages of 30 and 45, were having breakfast when two masked suspects entered the fast-food outlet and began shooting. All three victims were declared dead at the scene.

Gunmen Strike In Broad Daylight

Authorities said the attackers fled immediately after the shooting. A large-scale manhunt was launched shortly after the incident, with officers from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department sealing off the area.

A statement shared by the City of Johannesburg’s Public Safety department on X detailed the initial response:

“JMPD CCTV Reaction Unit is attending to a shooting incident at the corner of Jeppe and Smal Streets in the Johannesburg CBD. Three male victims were found injured inside McDonald’s. Emergency services have been activated and the area is being secured.”

Police later confirmed that the victims succumbed to their injuries.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni condemned the killings and assured the public that investigations were underway.

“No stone will be left unturned during the investigation of the incident,” he said.

At this stage, authorities believe the victims were foreign nationals and shop owners. Reports suggest they may have been Somali nationals, although this has not been officially confirmed.

Fear And Anger In The CBD

The attack has intensified concerns about rising violent crime in the Johannesburg inner city. Ward 59 councillor Sthembiso Hlatshwayo described the situation as alarming.

“Even yesterday, someone was shot on this very same street, which means four people have been shot and killed in this street in a space of hours,” he said.

“This raises serious concerns about safety. As a councillor I’ll have to look into this, working closely with the police.”

Hlatshwayo warned that residents and business owners are living in fear as gun violence becomes more frequent in the area.

Social media reactions also reflected growing frustration and anxiety. Some users called for stronger policing, while others speculated about possible motives behind the attack. However, none of these claims have been verified.

Police Appeal For Information

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged members of the public to assist with information that could lead to arrests.

“We appeal to anyone with information to come forward or report anonymously via the SAPS crime line 08600 10111 or their nearest police station,” police said.

Investigators are currently working to establish the motive behind the killings. No arrests have been made so far.

The incident remains under active investigation as law enforcement agencies continue their search for the suspects.
