City of Harare Orders Removal of Illegal Advertising Structures

The City of Harare has ordered property owners to remove all unauthorised billboards, murals and banners erected without council approval, warning that strict enforcement action will follow for those who fail to comply.

The directive targets structures placed on road servitudes as well as those mounted on private buildings without clearance.

By-Laws and Legal Breaches

In a public notice issued on Thursday, Acting Town Clerk Engineer Phakamile Mabhena Moyo said the widespread erection of such advertising materials violates the city’s advertising by-laws as well as national road traffic regulations.

Authorities stressed that all individuals and businesses responsible must either remove the structures immediately or approach council offices to regularise them and settle the necessary fees.

Warning of Enforcement Action

The city has warned that failure to comply will result in direct intervention. Officials said any illegal structures left standing will be removed by the council, with the costs passed on to the offenders.

Move Long Overdue

The crackdown comes amid growing concern over the proliferation of unapproved adverts plastered across walls, buildings and roadside spaces throughout the capital. Council officials say the enforcement drive is aimed at restoring order and ensuring compliance with urban regulations.
