Good Hope FM confirmed the passing of Lorenzo Darries after a brave fight with heart disease. According to his family, he suffered a stroke on Monday night. He then passed away in hospital on Tuesday morning.
Listeners knew Darries for his vibrant on-air presence. Moreover, many admired his warmth, humility, and love for storytelling.
From Cape Flats to the spotlight
Darries grew up in the Cape Flats in Cape Town. He lived in Lavender Hill, Mitchells Plain, and Retreat.
He began his broadcasting journey while studying in 2019. He studied at Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
Although he missed the final Campus DJ Search stages, he impressed many. As a result, he joined Good Hope FM in February 2020.
A legacy of resilience and impact
Over time, Darries became a trusted radio voice. He hosted shows like Weekend Sports WarmUp and Play-By-Play. Later, he also hosted The Great Drive.
His engaging style built strong connections with listeners. In addition, he worked as a producer on S3’s Expresso.
Darries openly shared his journey with heart disease. He often called his renewed life his “iron heart”.
Colleagues remember his positivity and uplifting spirit. They also recall his passion and ability to bring laughter.
Masi Mdingane paid tribute to his impact. “It’s impossible to overstate the impression that Lorenzo left on the hearts and lives of those who had the privilege of meeting and knowing him. He gave his talent, his time, and his being to this station and to the city he loved.”
