Armed Robbers Storms AFC Bank

Four armed robbers wearing balaclavas raided AFC Bank at Murambinda Growth Point around 1 am on Wednesday. The gang escaped with US$9,807 and ZiG152,190 in cash.

During the robbery, the suspects assaulted and injured security guard Tadius Chimuka, 30, who was on duty at the bank.

Chimuka and another guard, Upenyu Mudiwa of Salphire Security, had their hands and legs tied before the robbers stole the money.

Robbers Overpower Security Guards

Acting Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident to Chipinge Times.

He said that around 1 am, Mudiwa guarded the Murambinda Town Board Survey Offices when four armed men approached him.

The suspects wore balaclavas and carried pistols. They threatened to kill him if he shouted or moved.

Afterwards, they tied him with shoelaces and marched him to the AFC Bank perimeter wall.

The gang then forced entry onto the premises after breaking part of the wall using an iron bar.

Soon after, they confronted Chimuka, of Chikwekwete Village, who worked for Guardian Security.

The robbers struck Chimuka once on the back of the head and once on the mouth using an unknown object.

They later disarmed him of his pistol and tied both guards with shoelaces.

The suspects marched the guards about 40 metres away from the bank. They then ordered them to lie on their stomachs while one robber stood guard.

Gang Drills Into Vault and Escapes

Meanwhile, three robbers returned to the bank and broke the padlocks on the screen door.

They drilled through a wall into the vault before using a grinder to force it open.

The gang then stole US$9,807 and ZiG152,190 from a safe inside the vault.

After the robbery, the suspects marched the guards to a toilet and locked them inside before fleeing.

Police later recovered Chimuka’s pistol in the bank yard.

As of last week, police had made no arrests. Furthermore, authorities had not recovered the stolen cash.
