Road accidents decreased significantly during Zimbabwe’s 2026 Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.
Police recorded 145 crashes, down from 196 during the same period last year. This represents a 26 percent decline in recorded accidents.
The number of deaths also dropped from 24 last year to 18 this year. Meanwhile, injuries fell sharply from 96 to 51.
Police Highlight Improved Road Safety
Despite the overall decline, fatal crashes remained unchanged at 13 during both periods.
Police credited intensified road safety campaigns for the improved figures. These initiatives involved the Zimbabwe Republic Police and other road safety stakeholders.
Passengers accounted for the highest number of fatalities during this year’s holiday period. Nine passengers lost their lives in the recorded crashes.
Pedestrians followed with five deaths during the period. Additionally, two scotch cart occupants, one driver and one rider died.
Importantly, none of the fatalities involved public service vehicles. Private and family-owned vehicles accounted for nine deaths.
Meanwhile, eight fatalities occurred in crashes involving various other vehicles. These included three lorries, two ox-drawn scotch carts, a tractor and a motorcycle.
Human Error Remains Major Concern
Police identified several dangerous behaviours behind the crashes recorded during the holidays.
Driver inattention and misjudgement contributed to several accidents. Speeding also remained a major factor in crashes.
Furthermore, motorists followed other vehicles too closely in some incidents. Dangerous overtaking and failure to give way also contributed to accidents.
Reckless and negligent driving remained another significant concern for authorities.
Police welcomed the improved behaviour displayed by motorists and other road users. However, authorities urged everyone to maintain those standards beyond the holidays.
Motorists should observe speed limits and avoid dangerous overtaking. They should also remain patient and attentive throughout every journey.
Additionally, police warned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Maintaining responsible road behaviour can help reduce future accidents and fatalities.
