Six Highlanders Fans Killed In Road Accident Granted State-Assisted Funerals
The Government has granted State-assisted funerals to six Highlanders supporters who were killed in a road accident near Filabusi on Sunday.
Highlanders Football Club has welcomed the Government’s intervention and thanked President Emmerson Mnangagwa for supporting the families following the tragedy.

Fans Were Returning From Highlanders Match
The six victims had travelled to Barbourfields Stadium to watch Highlanders face Herentals earlier that day.
They were on their way back to Filabusi when the tragic accident happened.
The Nissan NV350 kombi carrying the supporters crashed into a stationary tipper truck about 15 kilometres from Amazon Shopping Centre along Filabusi Road.
A Honda Fit was subsequently involved in the collision.
Six people died, while four others survived and were taken to hospital.
Club Welcomes Government Intervention
In a statement, Highlanders said the Government’s decision would provide practical assistance to the bereaved families as they prepare to bury their loved ones.
The club expressed its appreciation to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Government for intervening after the tragedy.
“Highlanders Football Club wishes to express its profound gratitude to His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, and the Government of Zimbabwe for granting State-Assisted Funerals to our six beloved supporters who tragically lost their lives in the road accident that occurred near Filabusi on Sunday, 23 August 2026.”
Highlanders said the victims had been making their way home after supporting the team at Barbourfields Stadium.
“Our supporters were travelling back to Filabusi after watching Highlanders FC play Herentals FC at Barbourfields Stadium when tragedy struck, claiming six precious lives and leaving our Club, their families, friends and the entire football fraternity in deep mourning,” said Highlanders in a statement.
‘More Than People In The Stands’
The club said State assistance was more than a financial intervention, describing it as a compassionate gesture during a painful period.
Highlanders also reflected on the importance of its supporters, saying their connection with the club extends beyond match-day attendance.
“At Highlanders, our supporters are more than people in the stands – they are family.”
The club said the six supporters had shown their commitment by travelling to watch the team and would remain remembered as part of its history.
“These six supporters travelled in love and loyalty for the black and white, and their contribution to the Highlanders story will never be forgotten.”
