‘He reminds me of a Masilela’: Bongani Khumalo on young Sundowns star

Thato Sibiya is Sundowns supporters’ new teenage favourite. The 19-year-old left-back looks fearless and confident. He announced himself in Monday’s 2-0 Betway Premiership win. Sundowns beat Orbit College and Sibiya won Man of the Match.

It was his first senior match for Sundowns. He also delivered an assist on debut. He set up the club’s Colombian striker, Brayan Leon.

From Kagiso to the Sundowns first team

Sibiya comes from Kagiso in Krugersdorp. He joined Sundowns in 2023 after shining for Panorama FC. He played in the Gauteng Development League and impressed regularly. Soon after, he moved closer to the first-team picture.

Before the DStv Diski Challenge step, he starred at the Engen Knockout. He became one of the tournament’s top performers in 2023. He is also a South Africa U20 international.

“He looks like a proper player,” says Bongani Khumalo

SuperSport analyst Bongani Khumalo praised Sibiya’s impact. Khumalo compared him to Tsepo Masilela and Patrice Evra. “He looks like a proper player,” Khumalo said on SuperSport TV. “He reminds me of a Tsepo Masilela and Patrice Evra type of fullback. His body and structure. “The style of play. He has that Masilela vibe. The way he moves. “He is very strong on the ball. Technique and so much strength on the ball. He is a player,” Khumalo added. Sibiya wears Sundowns jersey number 45.

Cardoso’s left-back battle and the next big test

Sibiya has strengthened Miguel Cardoso’s left-back choices. He now competes in a crowded and experienced group. Aubrey Modiba and Divine Lunga bring proven quality and leadership. Fawaaz Basadien also adds depth and consistency.

Asekho Tiyawi offers another younger option. Now, Sundowns switch focus to the CAF Champions League. Next, the champions travel north to face Al-Hilal in Sudan.
