Kombi Explosion Kills 18 Near Gwanda Tollgate, Police and Army Search Bush For Bodies

Gwanda Tragedy: 18 Feared Dead After Kombi Explodes Into Flames

A kombi explosion has killed approximately 18 people along the Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road near Gwanda, with police, army, and fire brigade teams searching nearby bushland for bodies following the devastating blast on Thursday afternoon.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the tragedy in a statement posted on X on 16 April 2026, indicating that the fatal incident occurred between 1300 hours and 1400 hours.

“Breaking news: The ZRP reports the death of +/- 18 people when a kombi exploded into fire between Chipangali and Gwanda tollgate along Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road between 1300 hours and 1400 hours today. More details to be released in due course,” the police said.

Chaos At Blast Scene

Details emerging from the scene suggest that emergency services responded rapidly after the explosion, which reportedly involved a Toyota Quantum kombi. The vehicle is believed to have burst into flames in the middle of the road, triggering panic among motorists and nearby communities.

Reports indicate that the blast occurred near an area referred to as Much Binding, just outside Bulawayo. Authorities immediately cordoned off the site after what appeared to be explosive remnants were discovered scattered near a crater formed by the explosion.

Witness accounts cited by local publications describe a “massive fireball” engulfing the vehicle within seconds, leaving little chance for occupants to escape.

Police and military personnel were deployed alongside the Bulawayo Fire Brigade to search the surrounding bushland for possible victims who may have been thrown from the vehicle during the explosion.

“Police and military personnel have joined the Bulawayo Fire Brigade on the scene… combing nearby bushland for bodies,” reports from the scene state.

Suspected Explosives Raise Questions

Preliminary information suggests that the kombi may have been transporting explosive materials at the time of the incident. However, authorities have not yet officially confirmed the nature of the cargo.

The presence of what has been described as “explosive fuselage” near the blast site has raised serious concerns about the cause of the explosion.

Sources at the scene indicated that “some explosive fuselage were seen a few metres from a crater that was formed because of the blast.”

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, and investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the explosion.

Death Toll Unclear As Investigations Continue

While the Zimbabwe Republic Police placed the death toll at approximately 18, earlier reports suggested that at least 10 people were feared dead.

This remains a developing story, with officials expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.

“More details will be released in due course,” police reiterated in their initial statement.
